A visit from Dr. Luis Viquez from USD

It's always a great day when we get a visit from our friend, Dr. Luis Viquez. Dr. Viquez is Professor of Clarinet and Director of Orchestras at the University of South Dakota (USD) He's one of the most interesting and personable people I've ever met, and we're so glad he's in Siouxland. Every time Luis stops by, I get to hear about his many adventures performing and conducting all over the world. This summer he has multiple conducting engagements with professional orchestras as well as clarinet recitals and teaching. We invite you to read more about Luis on the USD web site as well as his personal website.

Recently, Dr. Viquez stopped by to have Blair Dake adjust his Buffet bass clarinet. Here's what he has to say about Blair and our repair shop...

I have used technical support in many places all around the United States and Latin America, and Midbell Music has the best service I have received so far. Excellent customer service and all of the staff is friendly, positive, and enthusiastic. Thanks, Midbell, for sponsoring our area musicians, teachers, and students!

Just a few weeks ago we had the pleasure of sponsoring Dr. Viquez's event, the 2018 South Dakota Clarinet Day which featured Luis, our friend Dr. Deborah Reeves, as well as Dr. Jane Carl and flautist/piccoloist Jan Gippo. We featured several fine clarinets and were witness to fantastic student and artist performances. Here's a few tidbits and photos from the Clarinet Day.

Dr Viquez is also involved in a recent campaign for a unique musical project happening soon in Costa Rica. To learn more, or donate, visit their indiegogo page

It’s days like today that we’re reminded of what a wonderful community Sioux City is! Yesterday we noticed a that a Bach Strad Professional Trumpet priced at $2,899. was missing from our show floor…Upon further investigation, we realized the instrument had been stolen and was listed on Facebook for sale! Less than 3 hours later, Sgt. Bill Melville assembled a team and the amazing Sioux City Police Department set-up a sting, recovered the stolen trumpet and arrested the thief!

We're always on the lookout for innovative products. One little nugget we found this year at NAMM 2018 was Key Leaves. Since about 7th grade, I've always been frustrated when my saxophone G# key sticks.

We’re so glad everybody at Midbell is safe and we’re glad to be back at work, ready to help our valued customer and friends.

A few of us are heading to the yearly NAMM show this week in Anaheim. Originally NAMM was the acronym for National Association of Music Merchants. The association is now called The International Music Products Association, but the original acronym stuck, and the trade show is still referred to as NAMM.
